Old houses, wooded lots, long winters

Why Newtown chimneys work harder than most

Newtown has some of the oldest houses in Fairfield County. The colonials and farmhouses along Main Street and in Sandy Hook have big center chimneys that were built long before modern flue liners. Out on the wooded lots, plenty of homes burn wood all winter in a stove or insert. Both put a lot of wear on a chimney, and both need more than a quick brush.

  • Wood stoves and inserts that run every day from fall to spring build creosote fast
  • Antique center chimneys with no liner, or a liner that has cracked or shifted
  • Inserts installed without a full-length liner up the chimney
  • Crowns and mortar broken up by Connecticut freeze-thaw cycles
  • Leaks at the flashing, and animals nesting in chimneys with no cap

Why homeowners call us back

No theatre, no scare tactics, no invented emergencies

Careful with old houses

Antique chimneys get repairs that suit them: matching mortar, matching brick and stone, and liners sized to the flue.

Questions we get every week

Straight answers

We burn wood every day all winter. How often should the chimney be swept?
NFPA 211 calls for a yearly inspection, with sweeping when it’s needed. A wood stove or insert that runs every day usually needs sweeping at least once a season, and sometimes mid-winter too. We’ll tell you how fast yours is building up so you can plan.
Our house is over 200 years old. Is the chimney safe to use?
Many antique chimneys were built with no flue liner at all, or have liners that have cracked over time. A camera inspection shows what’s there. If it isn’t safe, a stainless steel liner sized to your fireplace or stove usually lets you keep using it.
Does a fireplace insert need its own liner?
Yes. Current codes call for a full-length liner from the insert to the top of the chimney. Many older inserts were installed without one, which lets creosote build up in the smoke chamber and makes the insert draft poorly. We check this on every insert we sweep.
Water is coming in around the chimney. What causes it?
Usually a cracked crown, a missing cap, worn mortar joints or failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. We find the source before we quote a fix.
Do you do inspections for home sales?
Yes. A Level 2 inspection, with a camera run up the flue and a check of the accessible parts of the chimney, comes with a written report and photos for your attorney, home inspector or insurer.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the chimney. A single fireplace and a wood stove with a 30-foot liner are very different jobs, so we quote after seeing it. The quote comes before the work and doesn’t change afterwards.
